Garden Tips & Resources

Pansies are tough by nature. In many warmer climates such as the Southern US and the West Coast, gardeners habitually plant fall pansies to extend the gardening season. Now, Northern gardeners can enjoy the benefits of fall-planted pansies, too.

Snow Angels™ are an all-new series bred for optimum performance – including overwintering. Plant Snow Angels pansies in the fall – as far north as Zone 4 – and they will survive the winter to bloom again the following spring.

Your garden will host beautiful, vibrant color until late in fall. After a dormant period in the winter, look forward to early spring blooms and vigorous growth to yield large plants as spring turns to summer.

There are a few tips to getting the best results, and ensuring winter survival:

1 Plant in garden beds
In-ground beds provide more winter insulation and protect plant roots. If you plant in containers, the roots can dry out and freeze, which kills the plants. Container gardening is not recommended if you want spring blooms.

2 Shelter is best
Pick a spot that is protected from the wind and offers lots of sunlight. This will keep plants blooming longer in the fall, keep them safe over the winter, and promote earlier spring flowering.

Getting the Most from Your Garden
Winter can be wacky, but in general, Snow Angels are able to take it. After a light frost, the plants will limp over, but the warmth of the sun will spring them back to life. After a hard frost or sustained below-freezing temperatures, the plants might look dead. Do not despair – they are merely hibernating. Snow cover is a good insulator and provides protection for the plants. A quick thaw followed by freezing is more problematic, but if your garden is well-drained, your plants should be fine.

Spring blooming will most likely occur before your daffodils and tulips. You will be amazed at how quickly Snow Angels grow in the spring with a very vigorous blooming habit. When the weather turns hot, pansies can start to get "leggy" – they grow more stems with fewer flowers. To keep your garden looking its best, slowly replace Snow Angels with your summer annuals. By the time your summer annuals have grown in, you will have removed all the Snow Angels pansies. Do the same thing in fall but in reverse. Plant Snow Angels around your summer annuals, and slowly remove your summer annuals as the pansies prosper. Your garden will always look established and full of color!

3 Don't forget to water
If you're not used to watering plants in the fall, it's easy to forget. But don't let plants dry out. Keep soil evenly moist.
4 Well-drained soil
If water puddles around plants, it could freeze and kill the roots. Make sure the soil is well drained.
5 No road salt
Road salt can easily kill plants. Make sure your garden is not exposed to road salt.
